Though a painter by training, Metz was an avid printmaker and established the printmaking program at UC Santa Cruz. Metz considered herself a plein air painter and, when she wasn’t teaching, would spend hours outdoors sketching and painting the landscape. With a focus on abstraction, Metz enjoyed experimenting with different and unique ways to represent landscapes through painting and printmaking. Throughout her life, Metz was a major supporter of environmental protection organizations and advocated for art education programs for K-12 students.
